We had a lovely spring day here in Melbourne on Wednesday so we decided to drive to the Dandenong Ranges and visit the National Rhododendron Gardens. There is  mini bus to take people on a circuit which lasts for 30 minutes, but it doesn’t stop for people to take photos. We decided to walk which gave us plenty of time to admire the trees and flowers. We walked slowly for about 30 minutes and then had a rest to take in the view of the mountains in the distance. We then had to walk back to the car park, but this time there was quite a slope we had to climb. My wife became very tired on this part and we had a few stops on the way. She said she needed a drink of water, and was hungry on the way back but we hadn’t taken anything with us. At one point she said that she couldn’t take another step and that she would stay there. I said that she can’t do that, cars are not allowed into the gardens and she would have to keep going.

We used to do lots of walking in national parks. Wilsons Prom was our favorite place. One day we did about 25 km to Sealers Cove and back to Tidal River, another day we went  to the top of Mount Oberon. In the Grampians we walked to the top of Mount William and back. We even climbed the Horn on Mount Buffalo. We would often do a 6 or 7 km walk in an afternoon. My wife used to walk 3 km to the shops and then 3 km home again. She did this not because there was no transport, but because she enjoyed the exercise. How times have changed.
